Maintenance and Care Tips: Garage Doors

• As necessary, paint or refinish your wood garage door. How often you need to do this is dependent upon the climate of your area and the weather at the time. Metal and fiberglass doors do not necessarily need this kind of service regularly, thanks to their glazing. However, some aluminum doors and a few steel ones might need painting from time to time.

• Several times a year, you will probably find it necessary to wash your door. Again, this depends upon your preference for aesthetic value, the area you live in, and recent weather near your home.

• Once a year, you should lubricate many of the parts of your garage door. This includes rollers, bearings and pulleys. You can usually have a professional do this for you if you are not able to reach parts of your door.

• Torsion springs should be serviced every few years. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SERVICE TORSION SPRINGS YOURSELF. These springs are under an enormous amount of tension, and if anything goes wrong they can break and snap at a very high velocity. Severe injury can result, so make sure that you find a professional contractor or garage service specialist to help you.
